Like many a photographer, I started out wanting to be a photojournalist, or more precisely, a journalist with a camera. But I was confused. As it turns out I am a much better photographer than journalist and it was documentary photography that really held my heart. So when journalism morphed into personalities-only and reporting-by-press-release, I turned to self-assigned projects on subjects that interested and moved me while continuing to do the work that comes my way. By self-funding these projects, I am able to spend as much time as needed without “editors” setting parameters of any kind.
These projects focus on work, social institutions, and on the contrast I see with how popular culture represents the reality of such institutions.
